Chudnite Mostove (The Wonderful Bridges) also known as the Skalnite Mostove is a rock phenomenon situated in the karst valley of the river Erkyupriya in the West Rhodope Mountain. They are situated at 1450m above the sea level, at the foot of Golyam Persenk peak.

The bridges are formed by the corrosive power of the once flooding river in the past that hollowed out the marble plate’s flaws into a deep water cave, whose ceiling collapsed, forming majestic marble bridges. The debris were also carried away by the river.

As a result, the two famous bridges were formed. The large bridge is about 15 meters wide in its wider parts and almost 100 meters long. It consists of three arches, the largest of which is 45 meters high and 40 meters wide. The small bridge is 200m away from the large one along the river’s current. It is inaccessible, 60 meters long, with total height of 50 meters, and the height of the arch is 30 meters. There is also a small third bridge after it, which is a ponor cave, in which the waters of Erkyupriya River disappear, to appear again on the surface 3 kilometers farther.

Legend says the Wonderful Bridges were created many years ago, when near Zaburdo village there were many sheep farms. A dragon (Bulgarian: zmei) started ravaging the shepherds’ herds. Many years the shepherds suffered his attacks but they came up with a plan at the end: Loading the pack saddles of a donkey with tinder powder, they started a fire of the load. The dragon swallowed the donkey along with the load, which started slowly inflaming within the dragon. The creature, looking for relief, tried to hide itself, digging a hole in the ground. Many years, after it died and his body was decomposed, the bridges around it remained. This is how, according to the legend, the Wonderful bridges appeared.

The site, surrounding the two bridges is covered with venerable coniferous woods, mainly spruce. Both bridges are secured and opened to visitors. They are crossable both on and under.

The bridges are declared a natural reserve and a protected territory in the Bulgarian protected areas and zones register.

The Wonderful Bridges are listed in the 100 Tourist Sites in Bulgaria with number 85.
