Established in 1935 by Stoyu Nedelev Shishkov, the Smolyan Regional History Museum is the biggest in the Central Rhodopes. It preserves items and memorials from the people, inhabiting the central part of the Rhodope Mountains during the ancient times and through the history of the area.

The museum’s permanent exhibition, themed “Cultural and Historical Treasures of the Rhodopes from Ancient times to nowadays” is divided in two sections: Archeology and Ethnography. The museum halls  show gifted Rhodope craftsmen’s items.
