Koshnica is situated 25 km from Smolyan and about 45 km from Pamporovo, at an altitude of 889 meters in the upper basin of the Arda River. The village’s name derives from its geographical location in a landscape bowl resembling a basket. The area is home to the late antique and medieval fortress of Kaleto, from which the ancient Central Trans-Rhodope road is visible. Archaeological finds from the fortress, including coins, fibulae, and pottery, are displayed at the Regional Historical Museum in Smolyan. Koshnica is surrounded by numerous natural attractions, including the rock formation “Cherpa” and the “Troshachkata” campsite.
