Gradat is located 15 km east of Smolyan and about 25 km from Pamporovo, at an altitude of 1100 meters in the heart of the Rhodopes. The village offers picturesque panoramas, fresh air, and friendly inhabitants. Founded around 350 years ago by Hasan
Kheya and Karasali, it is known for its historical and cultural significance. The village features the Momchilova Fortress, situated at an altitude of 1215 meters. It is part of a system of fortresses guarding the route from Thrace to the Aegean Sea. The fortress includes a Thracian rock sanctuary and was a fortification from the time of Emperor Justinian I. Restored in the 11th century, it was handed over to the Rhodope ruler Momchil by Byzantine Emperor John Cantacuzene in 1343. The fortress was burned by the Ottomans in the late 14th century and was not restored. Today, after archaeological studies and restoration, the fortress is accessible and open to visitors.
