Krastova Gora

Krastova Gora, located 60 km from Plovdiv, 40 km from Asenovgrad, and about 80 km from Pamporovo, is one of Bulgaria’s most influential Christian sites, attracting numerous pilgrims. Situated at an altitude of 1545 meters in the Middle Rhodopes and surrounded by picturesque forest, it is said to house a particle of the Holy Cross, which adds to its significance. The complex includes the church of “Protection of the Holy Virgin,” completed in 1995, from which a path leads to the top of a small hill with
chapels dedicated to the 12 apostles. Historically, it had a monastery dairy from Bachkovo Monastery, and the monks founded a small monastery “Holy Trinity.” Tradition holds that they received an icon of Bakuriani with embedded fragments of the Holy Cross, which further attracted believers from across the country. In 1936, Tsar Boris III donated a large metal cross weighing 99 kg, with a replica located at the highest point at the end of the path. Locals believe the cross has miraculous powers, and the nearby spring is also considered healing. The highest visitation occurs on September 13, before the Cross Day (September 14), when thousands of believers come for prayers and overnight vigils.
