Asenovgrad

Asenovgrad, located about 65 km. from Pamporovo, is known for its rich cultural and historical heritage.

Situated on the border between the mountain and the plain, the city has been attractive for settlement since ancient times due to its favorable location and climate. In the Asenovgrad area, in the village of Dolnoslav, a unique Neolithic cult center was discovered. Archaeological research also reveals Thracian settlements and rock sanctuaries, including the enigmatic Balantas sanctuary and sanctuaries of the Thracian Horseman. During the Middle Ages, Asenovgrad, then called Stenimachos, was strategically important and frequently changed rulers. Tsar Ivan Asen II fortified the local fortress, which later became known as Asen’s Fortress. The city’s name was changed to Asenovgrad in 1934. The city played an active role in the events of the Unification of Bulgaria in 1885 and established itself as an important sacred center with numerous churches and monasteries.
