Back to Roots – Architectural Reserve Shiroka Laka

The “Shiroka Laka” tour will immerse us in the atmosphere of one of the most picturesque and authentic villages in the Rhodope Mountains.

We depart from the Tourist Information Center in Pamporovo by organized transport, and after a short journey, we arrive at the heart of Shiroka Laka—a village that has preserved Bulgaria’s traditions, folklore, and Revival-period architecture. Our walk begins along narrow cobbled streets that wind among authentic Rhodope-style houses. Here, time seems to stand still—wooden verandas, intricately carved gates, and white facades preserve the spirit of centuries past.

Our first stop is the iconic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary—a symbol of faith and the unwavering spirit of the Rhodope people. Built in just 38 days, it impresses with its unique architecture and beautiful frescoes. We’ll then visit the National School for Folk Arts, where young talents study the art of the Rhodope kaba gaida (bagpipe) and traditional singing, passing down the region’s authentic sound and customs from generation to generation. As we walk, we’ll pass ancient stone bridges and old watermills—living reminders of the everyday life and crafts of the local people. Every corner of Shiroka Laka holds a piece of the rich history of this unique region.

Shiroka Laka is not just a charming village or an open-air museum—it’s a vibrant center of Bulgarian tradition, music, and culture. The spirit of the Rhodopes can be felt in every detail—in the sound of the bagpipe, the aroma of local specialties, and the warmth of the people.

After the guided walk, you’ll have free time to enjoy a delicious lunch in a traditional Rhodope restaurant. We’ll then return to Pamporovo by organized transport.
