Discover the grandeur of history and spirituality on this full-day tour that takes you to the heart of Bulgarian culture – Plovdiv, and to two of the most sacred places in the Rhodope Mountains – Asen’s Fortress and Bachkovo Monastery.
We depart early in the morning from the Tourist Information Center in Pamporovo by organized transport to Plovdiv – one of the oldest cities in Europe, a contemporary of Troy and Mycenae, with history dating back to 4000 BC. A multicultural center for millennia, the city today impresses with its unique atmosphere and architecture.
In Plovdiv’s Old Town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we will explore: the impressive Ancient Theatre, still used today for performances; the remains of the Roman Stadium; the panoramic Nebet Tepe with a view over the entire city; the tradition-rich Ethnographic Museum; and, optionally, some of the beautifully restored Revival-period houses, now functioning as museums and art galleries.
After the guided tour, you will have free time for lunch and a walk through the artistic Kapana District or the central part of the city.
On the return journey to Pamporovo, we will stop at Asen’s Fortress – a medieval stronghold perched atop a cliff with breathtaking views over the Chepelare Valley. You’ll learn about its history and visit the well-preserved Church of the Holy Mother of God of Petrich.
We’ll then continue to Bachkovo Monastery, the second-largest and one of the most important monasteries in Bulgaria. Founded in 1083 by the Georgian noble Gregory Bakouriani, the monastery impresses with its architecture, frescoes, and serene atmosphere. We’ll view the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, explore the churches, museum, and the unique ossuary – a place of deep spirituality and prayer.
We return to Pamporovo in the evening, carrying unforgettable memories and inspiration from a true journey through time.
