Zlatograd and Madan – A Journey into Rhodope Traditions and Underground Secrets

Join us on a journey to Zlatograd, the southernmost town in Bulgaria, where time seems to have stopped to preserve the spirit of bygone centuries. We depart from the Tourist Information Center in Pamporovo by organized transport toward this architectural and cultural gem.

At the heart of Zlatograd lies the unique Ethnographic Area Complex, where we will immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of 19th-century Bulgarian life. We’ll explore restored houses and cultural monuments, and step into authentic craft workshops – for weaving, tailoring, braid-making, pottery, goldsmithing, and knife-making. Every corner here keeps the Rhodope traditions and craftsmanship alive. The visit also includes the Ethnographic Museum, where you’ll learn more about the lifestyle and culture of the region.

After the cultural tour, we’ll enjoy a lunch of traditional Rhodope dishes and try the famous “sand coffee”, brewed over hot sand in the old Turkish style.

On the return trip, we’ll stop in the Rhodope town of Madan, where an exciting encounter with the mining heritage of the region awaits. We’ll visit the “Rhodopi Crystal” Hall, which displays hundreds of shimmering minerals, as well as the underground Mining Museum “Spoluka”, which offers a vivid glimpse into the life and labor of local miners through an authentic underground exhibition.

By the end of the day, we return to Pamporovo enriched with new knowledge, impressions, and unforgettable memories.
