Excursion to Momchil’s Fortress – A Journey Through the History and Beauty of the Rhodope Mountains

We set off on an unforgettable journey from the Tourist Information Center here in Pamporovo with comfortable organized transport. Our destination is the picturesque village of Gradat, located about 16 km from Smolyan, nestled in the magical nature of the Rhodope Mountains.

Here, we will hike up to the impressive remains of Momchil’s Fortress – an ancient stronghold built during the Late Antiquity as part of a defensive network against northern barbarian invasions. The fortress is named after the legendary Rhodope hero Momchil the Brave and stands out with its dramatic location atop a rocky peak at 1,215 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views in every direction across the majestic mountains.

After this exciting walk and immersion into the atmosphere of bygone eras, we’ll pause for lunch in the village of Gradat. You’ll have the chance to enjoy the local cuisine and warm hospitality before heading back to Pamporovo.
