The “Perelik” tour takes you to the highest peak in the Rhodopes, offering an opportunity to delve into the legends of one of Bulgaria’s most mystical mountain ranges.
Our journey begins with organised transport from the Tourist Information Centre in Pamporovo to Perelik Hut (1960 metres above sea level), the starting point of our adventure. From here, we begin our ascent towards Perelik Peak (2191 metres above sea level). While the climb is demanding, every step brings us closer to breathtaking views. Upon reaching the summit, we’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas stretching across the Rila, Pirin, and Balkan mountains, as well as the peaks of Northern Greece. On clear days, we may even catch a distant glimpse of the Aegean coastline.
After a brief rest, we continue along a picturesque ridge, passing through some of the most stunning corners of the mountain. Our route leads us to Orpheus Peak (2188 metres above sea level).
From there, we descend towards the village of Gela – one of the most beautiful and authentic villages in the Rhodopes. Revered as an energy centre of the region, Gela is steeped in mystical tales and ancient myths. Many believe it was here that Orpheus, the legendary singer whose music enchanted both people and animals, was born. In addition to the Orpheus legends, the village is also linked to Saint Euthymius of Tarnovo.
In Gela, we’ll visit the early Byzantine basilica and the Church of the Holy Trinity – historic landmarks that preserve the rich cultural heritage of the area. After an eventful day, we’ll return to Pamporovo, bringing our adventure to a close.
